Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) that can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis. A significant number of those who are chronically infected with HCV will develop cirrhosis or liver cancer. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020 was awarded jointly to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice for the discovery of Hepatitis C virus. Thanks to their landmark breakthrough, highly sensitive blood tests for the virus are available and have essentially eliminated post-transfusion hepatitis in many parts of the world, greatly improving global health. Access to HCV treatment is improving but still limited.
