An Overview of Nanotoxicology and Available Nanoparticles for Your Nanotoxicology Research
By reducing the particle size to below 100 nm, the particles' physical and chemical properties, including electromagnetics, catalysis, thermal stability, flexibility, conductivity, pharmacokinetics, and targeting, are altered and improved. These modifications make nanoparticles suitable for different technical and medical applications. When bulk materials degrade into smaller pieces, their surface chemistry will change to increase their chemical reactivity, which is why some nanomaterials have strong catalytic activity. In addition, nanomaterials can easily enter cells and affect cell functions. Due to small particles' larger specific surface area per unit mass, the intrinsic toxicity of the particle surface will increase, thus producing potentially toxic or harmful effects to human health. Toxicology is a branch of science that studies the harmful effects of chemicals on humans, animals, and the environment. The key parameters of conventional toxicology are concentration and exposure time. Interestingly, the complexity of the interaction mechanism between nanomaterials and living organisms may come from nanomaterials' different behaviors when they get in touch with biological systems. Therefore, in addition to toxicology, nanotoxicology also emphasizes the study of nanomaterials' characteristics, such as morphology, size, surface charge, coating, and agglomeration state.
