Endogenous opioid peptides and their receptors play a role in a variety of functions including pain relief, modulation of mood and stress responses, and control of food intake. In addition, they are implicated in different aspects of addiction.
Opioid receptors serve as important drug targets and opioid peptide analogs are of interest for the treatment of pain and other conditions such as mood disorders and substance abuse. For example, peptide-based analgesics are being explored in the search for safer alternatives to existing opioid drugs because they may produce less tolerance, respiratory suppression, and addiction.
This month's highlights include news about a fungal antimicrobial peptide that is active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a nonsurgical approach to address peri-implant disease using a bifunctional peptide film, a promising novel peptide-based immunotherapy for peanut allergy, and a novel nanomedicine approach, allowing the specific delivery of Leu-enkephalin (LENK) neuropeptide into inflamed tissues for pain control.
